Visual Evidence

Busyness and running out of post space took the wind out of my blogging sails for a bit.

Here is the powerpoint presentation I plan to use for Judaism and Islam. Some notes can be found with each slide, and I can explain them further if need be...

Mideast Map Assignment

Here's the Mideast map assignment and the text of the email I sent.

Download hhc_mideast_map_assignment.doc

The map assignment is now on the blog and attached to this document. One map is in the reader.

I also have a two-sided map with a blown up blank map of Israel.

You can

A) Get the two-sided map from my classroom and copy it (I'll leave a few on the file cabinet in 111)
B) Just use the map in the reader, and delete the textbox that says "Israel Map" from the assignment before handing it out.

I recommend borrowing a few atlases from the library when doing this assignment. There are about 5 good ones, so we can share.

DEFINE PRIMARY SOURCE

15 Min: Assign HW, catch up on any Nnet folks may have missed, review timelines and check portfolios.
NOTE: IF STUDENTS WILL NOT HAVE THIS X CLASS, YOU’LL NEED TO COVER:

15 Min: Paragraph Writing. Ask Students what makes a good paragraph. Use Doug’s handout, and cover mini-thesis, quotations and evidence, logic, and concluding or transition sentences. Assign the homework due for class #4

Class #3

In Class
Objectives:
1) Paragraph Writing
2) Practice reading documents- though mostly these docs explain the troubles of British occupation and the possibility of Jewish/Arab partnership
30 Min: Primary Source review. Break the class into three groups to discuss one of the three documents, have them make a presentation using a few questions such as: Who is the author, what is their bias, what is the main point, how is this useful to historians?

20 Min: Paragraph Writing. Ask Students what makes a good paragraph. Use Doug’s handout, and cover mini-thesis, evidence, logic, sandwiching quotations and concluding or transition sentences. Assign the homework due for class #4

In Class

Objectives:
1) Consider the importance of personal identity in the conflict
2) Learn about the geography of the region and the interests of some of the other countries (I can probably make you all a cheat sheet)

15 Min: Review last night’s HW about identity
15 Min: Map Exercise- have students create maps of Middle East using the handout (HHC MidEast Map.doc)
15 Min: Discuss some of the other countries around Palestine, ask students what they know about them- perhaps give some brief background on Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.

First two days

So I've now made it through class #3 will almost all of my sections.

The Oasis of Peace movie I think worked pretty well, though I think it is tough to make a strong impact on kids in their first fews days of high school. Hopefully though the images of conflict will get them interested in the story.

Instead of doing the "question" exercises during class #3, I took some excerpts from their "research project" essays and edited them and put them into an email called Red vs. Blue. The email is below. I basically had them compare paragraphs with sufficient and insufficient detail and explanation. I do a lot of these kids of in-class assignments, and so I decided that this would be more useful right now than introducing the chat function. Eleni introduced chats today, so I will look forward to hearing about how that went for her.

It does feel like get my freshmen geared up is really quite slow. My II/I kids just dived right into class from day one. It takes much more time to get the freshmen to the point where class is really moving.

I'm looking forward to getting some of the basic Middle East history underneath our belts as we move forward...

FORWARD THIS EMAIL TO YOUR PORTFOLIO.

READ THE FOLLOW PARAGRAPHS AND AT THE END, WRITE A FEW SENTENCES EXPLAINING WHICH ARE BETTER, RED OR BLUE, AND WHY...

Blue vs. Red

[BLUE]Lastly, to identify with Joan, one would have to consider studying the Catholic faith. Every Sunday she attends Saint Julia’s churc. As well she goes to Catholic Religious Education. Finally, to learn about the Catholic religion it would be necessary to read about it.

[RED]Lastly, to identify with Joan, one would have to consider studying the Catholic Faith. Every Sunday she attends Saint Julia’s church to hear the Gospel and receive communion. As well she goes to Catholic Religious Education. Finally, to learn about the Catholic Religion it would be necessary to read and scrutinize the Bible; the major book used by Catholics, which holds both the new and old testaments and contains lessons from both God and Jesus Christ.

[BLUE] Ethyl also greatly enjoys outdoor activities. Any books or movies involving these activites would be worthwhile. The author could even look up Overland Adventures and read about them.

[RED] Ethyl also greatly enjoys outdoor activities. Any books or movies involving waterskiing, downhill skiing, rock climbing, or hiking would be worthwhile. The author could even look up Overland Adventures and read about them because Ethyl did a few trip with this company, and the activities that take place on these trips accurately illustrate what she enjoys doing.

MidEast ME Conflict Master 2.0

Here's a more complete version of the day to day syllabus including assignments, objectives and skeletal lesson plans. I've finished it, but I haven't proofed it yet. I'll probably update it several more times before September, but I wanted to get it up now so that you can look at it for Thursday.

Hopefully the full breadth of assignments helps answer some of Eleni's comments about note-taking for HW.

Ten Writing Tips

Here are ten things I focus on:
Download 10_things.doc

Mid East Simulation

#3- HHC ME Simulation- This is the plan for the final 1.5 weeks of class and the final assessments. I'm pretty pleased with how it finally came out. It's on the complicated side, but so is the conflict. AKG- a small note: right now I have planned to finish on a Friday, but it would be great if the MidEast final assignment could be due on a Monday if you don't mind starting your unit w/out a homework assignment.
Download hhc_me_simulation.doc

Mid East Master

#2- HHC MidEast Master.doc- A word document that has several parts:
a) Essential Questions for the unit
b) The skills chart we made updated with my comments on how I attempt to meet our skills goals.
c) A handful of useful website primers that you might find interesting
d) The first 1.5 weeks of assignments and lesson plans (Borrowing from AKG's idea, I didn't flesh out all of them completely until I got some feedback from the group, but I figured 6 would give a sense of my thinking a planning)

Middle East Conflict Master

Middle East Materials Attached are four documents:
#1- HHC ME Conflict Master.xls- A spreadsheet that has a week by week overview of the number of classes per week and then a brief description of each class and homework assignment.
