Baby-Boomer Interview

What I learned from this interview with my dad about babyboomer’s and the 70’s and 80’s was that many people were affected by those times and feel strongly about their own opinions. When my dad started talking about some of the things that he remembered, many of them were the ones we learned about in class. He brought up many of the same events that we had gone over in class like contragate “Iran contra”, and water gate, and Nixon’s resignation, black panthers, the draft, and student protesting so we know that these events effected many people throughout the country. The one interesting thing is that when you hear it come from a parent it especially hits close to home. Nothing against you Mr. Daccord but when a parent says something like that to you, it is just a little different. What is most intriguing about this topic is that everybody has their own stories but when you listen to them all, they all come back to the same points. People talk about Watergate, contragate, Nixon, and the war because those were the events that truly effected the entire country. That is why everybody talks about them because it wasn’t just a small group of people that were effected by it but it was the entire country as a whole. When my dad said it was interesting that Nixon resigned himself, it made sense to me as before I just kind of thought about it nonchalantly, but now it is interesting that he resigned himself. Maybe it was because he knew he would be forced out sooner or later if he didn’t resign anyway. The most interesting things about these interviews is that they aren’t TV shows where everything is made up but they are all true stories and true events. They are actual events that occurred in history so who knows if they could happen again or not. That is what caught my eye.

In the early 20th century, many people lived in poverty and I am sad to say that I am one of them. My name is Ellis Jenkins, and I don’t have a steady home. Rather than be called homeless or hobos, I like the term “nomad”. I am 35 years old but very frail because of the lack of food I have to eat. I am originally from Dances with Wolves, Kansas but left because I was laid off from work. When I got laid off, it was nearly impossible to find work again, so I decided to pack up and move. One thing I’ve had to live with out my entire life is friends. I fell down a flight of stairs when I was a baby and beat up my face pretty bad and the scar that is left is pretty intimidating and I am a shy person to begin with, so I don’t have many friends or any at all. Last fall I left Kansas with nothing but the clothes on my back, a back pack with a few of the essentials and one dollar and seventy five cents. Although I had picked up a few cents here and there, I still have very little money and feel lucky when I get a piece of bread to eat on any given day. My plan was to try and hop on a train and make it all the way to Florida which I had been told is like paradise. My only concerns were that I would run into bulls on the train who would kick me off, and little did I know that was the least of my problems.
The day I left, June 22nd I woke up feeling jittery and tired as usual. I always tended to feel tired because of the little amounts of food I ate. I ate so little that I was always weak and had little energy. I am wearing a worn in pair of shoes that I found out in front of a house one day being thrown away, a pair of worn in jeans and a smelly flannel button down shirt.
I went down to the train yard and hopped in the back of one of the outgoing trains that was going south because I know Florida was the southern most point in America. At least that’s what I thought, I wasn’t very educated at this point in my life. The train left the station and I thought I was clear from any problems. I fell asleep on the train and woke up to a severe pain in my side, as it was three bulls kicking me in the side. They shook me down, taking the little money that I had and then took my shoes which was probably the worst thing to lose because I had been using my shoelaces to make mulligan stew which is boiling shoelaces over a fire in water. Without any of the laces, I had gone from little food to none. The only thing I had to keep my going was the will to survive and the occasional fireside chat I would hear from the car next to mine. They would listen to President Roosevelt and I could listen in from the other side. I had left my own little hooverville where all of the “nomads” lived and was on a journey for a new life but things weren’t going as planned. The train finally arrived in Florida and I needed a quick source of employment so I looked to the CCC, the Civilian Conservation Core who could help me make a few bucks to keep me on my feet. They hired me to help with cleaning the parks and I have to say I was a great employee. I worked for the CCC for five years until I made enough money to search for another more steady job and eventually found a friend who got me into writing. Charles Dickens Jr. was his name and he helped me with my skills and I eventually got a book published and got myself out of the horrible life of a nomad.

Black Sox Scandal

Baseball had never been a huge success in the marketing world untill the early 1920's. Brought over from England as criquet in the 1800's, baseball was known by a small group of people. Travelling around the United States teaching the game, mnore and more people started to like it. Finally in 1919, the World Series was a very anticipated event. Sad to say, it is now known not for the baseball played, but for the scandalous events that went on throughout it.
In 1919, the chicago white sox were playing the Cincinatti Reds. 8 players on the black sox team were accused of throwing the series in exchange for money. These eight players included, Shoeless joe jackson. Eddie Cicotte and Claude "Lefty" Williams, Buck Weaver, Arnold "Chick" Gandil, Fred McMullin, and Charles "Swede" Risberg; and Oscar "Happy" Felsch. Although these players were never brought up on charges, all of them were banned from professional baseball for life.

Whats the proper role of government in modern american society

The role of government in modern american society is very similar to the role of the government in the 19th century america. The government is supposed to protect us from harm by continually keeping a strong army. When something does go wrong and we are harmed, the government should be there to help us bounce back from the infliction. the government should also be there to help America and unless asked for aid seeing harmful attacks from other countries in the forseeable future should stay out of other countries ways as well. It is very similar to Laissez Faire as the governent should stay out of the economy, the government should also stay out of other countries governments as well. The American government is here to help America and unlesss asked for aid should not be trying to do more than what it is meant for. Most countries are offended when America tries to do everything for them becuase this world is full of proud people and nobody likes to be babied.

1) Hard Working
2) Being Smart with the money you earn
3) Looking Clean
4) Being Polite - (as little enemies as possible)
5) Don't stop trying to move up the chain

Example of #1:

In the book, They show hard work because he shines shoes all day. being a child under tough living conditions, most would start stealing or doing anything they possibly could to start making money, but he decides to make money the honest way. Keeping track of his money responsibly is a completely different story.

industrial age post number one

today in class we got in groups and made paper air planes. We got in groups of five or six and made airplanes. The relavence to last nights reading is that we were, in a way using the theory of an assembly line to make our product. We used the assembly line to mass produce our product just like the workers did in the industrial age. By having specific jobs in our line it made the process easier. We had one person folding, then one person making the wings, then one person handing to the teacher to make the process go by faster.

9/11: Are we safer five years later?

Five years ago, tragedy struck in New York city on September 11. The United States, feelings that they were in a position where they could not be attacked was caught off guard when two planes flew into the World Trade Centers. I remember that morning walking into my sixth grade classroom and hearing about the attacks. Not believing it was true i brushed it off and went on with my day. Everybody was kind of strage throughout that school day and leaving Johnson Middle School I was told that this was no joke and that the attacks were real. I walked home like i did every afternoon, but today something was different. I walked into my kitchen once i got home and both of my parents were standing there. My parents were never home when i got home from school so i knew something was up. They sat me down and told me that my uncle and cousin both, worked in the Centers and that we hadnt heard from them all day. My mother was a nervous wreck but later that night, good news came to us. My uncle was lucky enough to be out of that building that morning getting coffee for the people he worked with. He was the boss of his organization and therefor never left but he wanted to do something nice on this beautiful morning and suprise his workers. My cousin was ranked #1 in his class at middlebury and was a perfectionist. He never did anything wrong and was never late for anything but this one morning, he ended up oversleeping. This amazing fact had me thinking for weeks. He was never late for anything but on this one day when tragedy struck, my cousin oversleeps? This makes me feel that someone was watching over our family and did us an incredible favor.
I wouldnt say that we are safer today because we are still very vulnerable to attack as is any country but what i would say is that we are more aware. we know from experience what can happen when a country is to hot headed. We know the pain that came with the 9/11 attacks and I think i can speak for all Americans when i say that none of us want to go through anything like that again.
